On March 19, the Central Hospital of Bergamo, Italy, declared a state of emergency. The hospital was overcrowded. Doctors said that they would receive 60 critically ill patients every day. The corridors and aisles of the hospital were all patients.
Seventy people died in 12 days. Only ambulances and hearses remained on the street. Local cremation was in operation 24 hours a day. Local churches were filled with the coffins of the victims.
